If you’re looking for a hotel in Ubud to be close to downtown, near some of the best yoga classes, and with a space where you can work: I’ve got just what you need! In this post, I’m sharing my review of the Outpost Ubud Penestanan hotel in Bali.

Essential piece of information before reading the rest of the post: this hotel is also a co-working space. This means you could potentially work there if needed, but also that you’ll easily meet other travellers working at the same time. They also have plenty of activities to make meeting people easy, but I’ll talk about that further down.

Before I go any further, don’t forget to find me on Instagram, Pinterest and Youtube.

Location

I chose the Outpost Ubud Penestanan hotel for its location. It’s literally across the street from the House of Om Melati yoga school, where I did my yoga teacher training in 2025. It’s also a 10-minute taxi ride from House of Om The Mansion and right across from the famous yoga and meditation centre, The Alchemy. You can also walk to downtown in 15–20 minutes or hop on the back of a motorbike taxi and be there in 5 minutes.

I also loved that there is several restaurants and cafés around the hotel, which is a real plus if you want to easily explore the surroundings. There’s a small convenience store nearby and a delicious cookie shop (Dang!). Should you book this hotel for that reason alone? Obviously, yes.

And let’s not forget the proximity to a few massage parlours, which was so nice after the long flight. Did I get carried away and book a 3-hour massage at Nomads Haus Spa a few hours after arriving? Absolutely. Do I regret it? Absolutely not.

Welcome & Staff

The staff on-site were super friendly, really warm, and welcoming. After a long flight of over 20 hours and a 1.5-hour drive, I was truly relieved to arrive at a place like this.

The room

I had booked a standard or deluxe room (I accidentally deleted all my emails last month… so I can’t find my booking details anymore..), and I got great news upon arrival: I was upgraded! That happens rarely enough to be worth mentioning! The team offered me the “Poolside suite.” It was huge (quite a change from hotels in Paris!), with a pool view, a bathtub, and large closets. And I repeat: so much space!!

I even had a small table and chairs outside. In fact, while sitting there with my journal, an elderly gentleman came over to share his whole life story with me. It was unexpected and touching to hear him talk about how he had decided to start travelling and exploring the world.

Important detail if, like me, you travel with a camera and laptop: the safe was large enough for me to fit everything inside!

Breakfast / Restaurant

Outpost Ubud has a restaurant attached to the hotel: Alchemy. It’s actually recommended on almost every list of top restaurants to try in Bali. The food is delicious, and the decor is restful, quiet, and rejuvenating. I ate there several times, even after my stay since my school was right across the road. They also have a natural products shop. Note that their famous yoga centre, Alchemy Yoga, is located right across the street from the hotel, next to my school. It’s a pretty complete setup if you ask me!

Amenities & Services

Since this hotel is tailored for digital nomads, there are plenty of services.

  • SIM Card: Before my arrival, they contacted me on WhatsApp to ask if I needed a SIM card. They took care of everything: when I arrived, the card was ready, and they installed it in my phone. I only had to pay for the cost of the card. If you prefer having internet access as soon as you land, you can read my complete guide on eSIMs, which is what I use now for my travels.
  • Taxi: When booking my hotel room with Outpost Ubud, I was able to easily add a taxi, which picked me up at Ngurah Rai Airport and dropped me off right in front of the hotel. The peace of mind it brought me was invaluable, arriving in a country where I don’t speak the language (even though most people speak English), combined with jetlag and fatigue, meant one less thing to worry about. We did the same thing in Mexico, and it made things so much easier.
  • Pool: As you can see in the photos, the pool is gorgeous. However, over a few nights, I didn’t see anyone using it. Since most guests are working, they might have less time to lounge around the pool, or they’re out exploring Ubud during their free time.
  • Co-working Space: Depending on the reason for your stay, this is a great bonus if you need to combine business with pleasure and work during your trip to Bali.
  • Communal Kitchen: Because it’s also a co-working space, you can cook and have designated space in the kitchen and fridges. It’s a nice way to avoid eating out every day.
  • Yoga Classes: Several times a week, yoga classes are held on the rooftop next to the bar.
  • Activities: They offer group dinners, excursions, movie nights, coffee meetups, painting nights, and workshops. The choice is endless, honestly, and it all serves the same goal: helping you meet people and connect with other members.

Atmosphere

For a hotel with a lot of young people, I expected it to be noisier, but not at all. The only noisy time was in the morning when people were in the kitchen because my room was nearby. Everyone was super respectful. Plus, since night falls pretty early, evenings tend to end earlier too.

Value for money

For 3 nights, I paid $234.24 CAD (€147), which included the $50 CAD (€31) for the 1.5-hour taxi ride from the airport to the hotel. For the quality of service, the hotel, the room, the amenities offered, and the proximity to many conveniences, it’s a great price!

Who is it for?

I’d say Outpost Ubud is a great fit for people passing through, as well as those planning to stay longer in Ubud, because you can easily meet other travellers and build your own little community. It’s ideal for people like me who are staying for a few days before starting their yoga teacher training at House of Om or another yoga school in Ubud.

Ideally, I see it being best suited for solo travellers or couples.

What I Wish I Knew Beforehand

The only thing that really caught me off guard, and it isn’t specific to the hotel, was the speed of the scooters on the roads. When I walked out of the hotel for the first time, I remember feeling overwhelmed. Scooters coming from both directions, driving on the opposite side of the road compared to Canada or France… I thought I’d never be able to step outside. But eventually, I got used to it, and walking from the hotel to downtown is completely doable without any problems.

When I Visited

I stayed at the hotel in November 2025, at the beginning of the rainy season and the end of the high season.

Overall Opinion

I think you could already tell throughout the article: I loved this hotel. I truly felt transported (after a 20-hour flight, that’s the least you could ask for, right?). The greenery around the pool was something I had only seen in photos before. Seeing it all right in front of me was beautiful, soothing, and a wonderful way to start my trip to Bali.

I would definitely go back for a few days. Maybe not if I were looking for a 100% vacation and relaxation resort, as you don’t get the same amenities a purely tourist resort offers, like Incense Impossible Beach where I stayed in Uluwatu.

I hope my review of Outpost Ubud helps you book your next trip. If you ever go, feel free to leave me a comment here or on Instagram to let me know. If you’re visiting Bali, you might also like my post on 6 local brands I recommend to bring a special souvenir home.
